A Georgian restaurateur who attacked a Romanian dentist in his surgery and demanded protection money has been jailed for three years.
Archili Mindadze, 40, from Griffith Hall, Griffith Avenue, Dublin pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assaulting Iurii Borta causing him harm at Summerhill Parade, Dublin on 1 October 2012.
Detective Garda Niamh Coates said that Mindadze and a co-accused asked the dentist: “Who is your roof?” – meaning who did he pay protection money to.
Mindadze sliced the dentist’s hand and struck him in the face as he and the co-accused, who has since fled the country, questioned him about protection money.
The defendant later claimed in interview he had gone to the surgery to complain about Mr Borta’s “substandard” dental treatment of another patient
Mindadze has 14 previous convictions, including dangerous driving and a 2008 theft.
